We didn't set out to build a soccer app.
Honestly, we set out to fix a group chat.
It started the way most of these stories do — with a problem so small and so annoying that nobody thinks to solve it properly, so everyone just… suffers through it instead.
The problem nobody wanted to admit
Every game day, the same ritual played out. Someone in the group chat would ask "who's in this week?" Fifteen people would react with a 👍. Three of them would ghost anyway. Someone would show up expecting 5-a-side and find out it was 7-a-side. The teams would somehow end up wildly unbalanced — six strikers on one side, nobody who wanted to play defense on the other. And by the time everyone actually kicked a ball, half the "session" had been spent on logistics nobody enjoyed.
We weren't trying to build a company. We were trying to make our own Saturday game less chaotic.
So we built a tiny internal tool. Nothing fancy — a way to see who was actually coming, split teams without an argument, and stop losing the thread of "wait, did John already pay for this month?" in a chat with 400 unread messages.
Then other groups wanted it too
Word travels fast in soccer circles. A teammate ran a different pickup group across town and asked if he could use "whatever that thing is you built." Then a five-a-side league organizer asked. Then someone messaged from a completely different city asking if it worked for 11-a-side too.
We said yes to all of it before we'd really thought it through — which, in hindsight, is exactly how the best things tend to start. Not with a grand plan, but with someone asking "can I use this too?" one too many times to keep saying no.
That's when we realized: this wasn't a tool for our group. It was a tool for every group that had ever dealt with the same chaos we had. And it turns out, that's basically every pickup soccer group on the planet.
What we learned by accident
Building for our own group taught us things no amount of market research would have. We learned that:
People don't want another app — they want less friction. Nobody signs up for software because it's exciting. They sign up because the group chat method finally broke one too many times.
Fair teams matter more than people admit. A lopsided match kills the vibe faster than almost anything else. Solving this quietly became one of our most-loved features.
Payment awkwardness is universal. Nobody wants to be "the guy" chasing people for their share of the pitch fee. Once we automated it, entire group admins told us it changed their week.
Community, not competition, is the real product. People weren't looking for a stats app or a scheduling app. They were looking for a reason to keep showing up — and a way to make that easier for the person organizing it.
None of this was in our original plan, because there was no original plan. We were just trying to make our own Saturdays better.
From one group to three countries
What started as a fix for one WhatsApp group somehow found its way into pickup games across Canada, leagues in the US, and five-a-side nights in the UK. Different accents, same problem: too much time spent organizing, not enough time spent playing.
We didn't chase this. It found us because the problem we were solving wasn't unique to us — it was universal to anyone who's ever tried to get eleven (or ten, or fourteen) people to show up to the same field at the same time, ready to play, without a spreadsheet, a headache, or an argument about teams.
Where we are now
Today, Sportpadi is used by groups who just want their soccer sessions to run themselves — check-ins that take seconds, teams that balance themselves, payments that don't require chasing anyone down, and stats that make the group chat more fun instead of more stressful.
We still don't think of ourselves as a "sports tech company." We think of ourselves as a group of people who got tired of bad game days and accidentally built something that fixed them — for us, and now, for a lot of other people too.
